A Night in Shibuya

An evening in Shibuya, walked outwards from the station: dinner within sight of the crossing, a beer with no cover charge, an izakaya on Center-gai, and ramen at an hour when the trains have long stopped. Shibuya runs later than anywhere else in this guide — one ramen counter here is still serving at 7:00 in the morning.

Two rules shape the evening before you choose a single venue, and both belong to Shibuya ward rather than to any venue. Drinking alcohol in the street, in a park or anywhere public around Shibuya Station is banned between 18:00 and 5:00, every day of the year. And smoking outdoors anywhere in the ward, outside a designated smoking place, carries a ¥2,000 fine collected on the spot. Both are set out in full on manners and transport at night.

18:00 — Dinner near the station

Eat first. Several of the later stops here serve little or no food.

  • KAIKAYA by the sea — fish sent in from Sagami and Suruga Bays, 70 seats, non-smoking, with an English menu and English-speaking staff. A booking is essentially required and an online one must include a course. The restaurant's own pages give two different sets of opening hours and two different closing days, so confirm before you go.
  • GONPACHI SHIBUYA — 224 seats, non-smoking, open until 3:30 the next morning, with a vegan menu and a halal course. A minimum charge of ¥1,000 (¥1,100 with tax) per person applies from 17:00, and the restaurant's own Instagram profile says it is cashless.
  • Umegaoka Sushi no Midori — inside Shibuya Mark City, 62 seats, open until 21:00 with last orders at 20:30. Seating works by numbered ticket, and ticketing can stop early when the queue will not clear before last orders, so arrive before you are hungry.
  • Sushi Ito Ikkan — the formal version: 15 seats, non-smoking, every guest orders a course, and the listed price already includes a 15 percent service charge and tax. The dress code is smart casual, and the restaurant states that men in T-shirts, shorts or sandals may be turned away.

20:00 — A beer with nothing added

GBF – Goodbeer faucets is the one venue in this guide that says so in writing: no cover charge, no otoshi, no service charge. Twenty-four beers on tap, fifty in cans, an English website and English spoken. It opens at 15:00 and closes at 23:00, with food last orders at 22:00, and it is closed on Mondays. Opening a canned beer costs ¥300, waived during happy hour.

For something shorter, Tachinomi Beer Boy is a standing bar in the basement of Shibuya PARCO, open 11:30 to 22:30 with drink last orders at 22:00. The group rotates about thirty craft beers across its taps, changing daily. The number of seats, the payment methods, any cover charge, the smoking policy and any age limit are not published, so ask.

Bar Ishinohana is the cocktail option, and it is the one to plan ahead for. It is closed on Wednesdays, Thursdays and public holidays, admits nobody under 20 in any circumstances, charges ¥500 per person, and asks each guest to order at least one drink or dish. Its online form takes bookings for one or two people and asks for at least a week's notice. Its own pages give two different sets of Sunday hours.

If you want the view

Tower's Bar BELLOVISTO sits on the 40th floor, about 150 metres up, looking across to the Shinjuku skyline. The whole bar is non-smoking, the dress code is smart casual, and from 18:00 nobody under 20 is admitted, even with a parent. A table charge of ¥2,000 per person applies from 19:00 — but not at the counter, which is where the view is. Listed prices already include a 15 percent service charge and tax. Reservations are taken up to a 19:00 arrival, and at weekends a table cannot be booked on its own.

22:00 — Center-gai and Hyakkendana

  • TORIKIZOKU Center Gai — every food item ¥410 including tax, open until 4:00 and until 5:00 on Friday and Saturday. Under-20s cannot come on their own; with an adult they can, and are served no alcohol. Reservations run two hours.
  • KUSHIKATSU TANAKA Hyakkendana — 58 seats, open until 1:00, menu in English, Chinese and Korean. ¥319 per person aged 20 or over, plus one drink each. Do not dip a skewer twice. Anyone aged 19 or under can order a soft drink and play rock-paper-scissors with the staff for a free one.
  • UOTAMI Shibuya Jinnan — 115 seats with private rooms, karaoke and a smoking booth, open until midnight. ¥498 per person covers the otoshi, and 10 percent is added to the bill if your first order lands between 22:00 and 5:00.
  • Isomaru Suisan Udagawacho — 104 seats, open around the clock, non-smoking with a separate smoking booth. The average spend the restaurant gives is ¥2,500 per person in the evening.

Midnight — the clubs

Both of Shibuya's long-running clubs set the same door conditions: guests must be 20 or over at night events, and photo identification is checked at the entrance — a driving licence, a passport or a My Number Card.

  • WOMB — open since 2000, four floors around an open atrium. Late-night events typically run 23:00 to 4:30. There is no re-entry, so go out once and that is the end of your night. A Premium Lounge table is ¥10,000 per person for two hours including admission, drinks extra, with 15 percent service added.
  • clubasia — open since 1996, a club and live house across several floors with a terrace. Opening times and admission are set per event; recent events opened at 22:30 or 23:00. For the event on 31 October 2026 admission was ¥2,800 in advance and ¥3,300 at the door, each plus one drink.

Some events at either venue start earlier and carry a different age limit, which is stated on the event page rather than the venue page.

Any hour — ramen, gyoza and sushi

This is what Shibuya is for at 4:00 in the morning.

  • Oreryu Shio-Ramen — on Center-gai, open from 11:00 until 7:00, every day, all seats non-smoking. Ramen runs ¥830 to ¥1,880.
  • Sushizanmai Tokyu Honten-mae — sushi until 6:00 the next morning, last orders 5:00, every day of the year. 62 seats, non-smoking, English dish names, ordering from your phone.
  • ICHIRAN Shibuya — open 24 hours, 21 counter seats and no tables. A late-night charge applies between 22:00 and 6:00 and the rate is not published. You may be turned away when it is full, even before last orders.
  • AFURI Dogenzaka — yuzu shio ramen until 23:00, and until 5:00 on Friday and Saturday only. The branch is fully cashless: cash cannot be used. There is a rainbow vegan ramen with lotus-root noodles, and the shop closes early when the soup runs out.
  • Oreryu Gyozaro — gyoza and drinks on the second floor on Dogenzaka, 17:30 to 5:00 with last orders at 4:30. Three gyoza ¥200, six ¥400. Smoking is allowed and the page mentions no non-smoking section.

Earlier in the evening, two ramen counters worth the wait: Menya Musashi Bukotsu Gaiden until 22:30 with 19 seats, and Moko Tanmen Nakamoto until 22:30, inside a cinema building, from 10:00.

Before you go out

Hold the two ward rules in mind and the rest of the evening is straightforward. No alcohol in the street between 18:00 and 5:00, anywhere around the station. No cigarette outdoors except in a designated smoking place; the nearest ones are at the Moyai Statue, the scramble crossing, the foot of Miyamasuzaka and the new south exit, with indoor rooms in Shibuya PARCO, Shibuya Stream, MIYASHITA PARK, Shibuya Fukuras and Shibuya Sakura Stage.

Touting is banned across the whole of Shibuya ward, and the ward enforces hardest within about 700 metres of the station — which is the entire route above. The ban is on the tout and on the business, not on you. Anyone who stops you on the street offering a bar is not connected to the venues listed here.

On age, Shibuya is stricter than Ueno or Shinjuku: four venues here state a limit rather than leaving it unsaid. BELLOVISTO after 18:00, Bar Ishinohana at all times, and WOMB and clubasia at night events all admit nobody under 20. If you are travelling with teenagers, the family page sets out which doors open.

Other evenings: a night in Shinjuku, and Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3 through Ueno, Okachimachi and Yushima. For the charges you will meet anywhere, read what gets added to the bill.
