Tokyo at Night on Your Own

Eating and drinking alone is ordinary in Ueno, Shinjuku and Shibuya, the three areas this page covers. Counters are the normal way to sit in a ramen shop, a standing bar or a whisky bar in Ueno, Shinjuku and Shibuya, and several places in each area never close at all. Almost every place below publishes a walk of under ten minutes from a station, so you are never far from your train.

Where to start

Start at Tachinomi Kadokura, a standing bar one minute from the Hirokoji Exit of JR Ueno Station. In the standing area you pay in cash for each dish and drink as it is handed to you, so you can have one shochu highball at ¥250 and leave without ordering a course. All seats are non-smoking, including e-cigarettes and heated tobacco.

If you would rather walk first, Ueno Park is open from 5:00 to 23:00 and free to enter, and the park's own pages describe the frog fountain near the Shinobazu entrance as lit up at night and useful as a meeting point. You cannot enter the park outside those hours.

If your night begins in Shinjuku or Shibuya instead, the simplest first seat is a ramen counter. ICHIRAN Shinjuku Chuo Higashiguchi and ICHIRAN Shibuya are both open 24 hours, seat everyone in a single booth and take the order on a paper sheet, so nothing has to be said out loud. From there, the area pages set out the walk: Ueno, Shinjuku and Shibuya.

Counters in Ueno where one person is normal

These places all seat you at a counter, so eating or drinking alone needs no explanation.

  • Menya Musashi Bukotsu Soden — a tsukemen shop one minute from the Shinobazu Exit of JR Ueno Station, open every day 11:15–22:15. It has only 17 seats, so expect to wait at busy times.
  • 2nd COOPER — a craft beer pub with 7 counter seats out of 42, where real ale is poured from a hand pump. The whole pub is non-smoking and dish and drink names are printed in English.
  • The Auditorium — a Japanese whisky bar 30 seconds from the Iriyaguchi Exit of JR Ueno Station, with 10 of its 26 seats at a single-slab counter and no seating or service charge. Smoking is allowed throughout and no one aged 20 or under may enter.
  • BAR SAMURAI — a basement bar open 18:00–1:00, two minutes from the station, built around a black marble counter. The bar states plainly that it is an ordinary drinking bar with no sword or flame performances, despite the name.
  • Sake Bar Ueno Shojyo — a junmai sake bar with counter seating only, open until 2:00, where the bar says solo guests are welcome. The table charge is ¥500 per person and includes a small appetizer. See the two conditions under Good to know before you go.

Counters in Shinjuku, from Golden Gai to Omoide Yokocho

Shinjuku keeps its single seats in small rooms: ten-seat counters in Golden Gai, the one bar in Omoide Yokocho, and partitioned booths in the basements by the station.

  • Sugoi Niboshi Ramen Nagi Shinjuku Golden Gai — ten seats at an L-shaped counter on the second floor of a building inside Shinjuku Golden Gai, open 24 hours, eight minutes from the East Exit of JR Shinjuku Station. The soup blends more than twenty kinds of dried sardine. Prices and payment methods are not published on the official site.
  • ICHIRAN Shinjuku Chuo Higashiguchi — open 24 hours in the basement of the Peace Building, three minutes from Shinjuku Station. All 28 seats are at the flavour concentration counter, partitioned into single booths, the ramen is ¥1,180 and extra noodles are ¥210.
  • FUUNJI Shinjuku — 15 counter seats, all non-smoking, five minutes from the South Exit of JR Shinjuku Station, with a break between 15:00 and 17:00. Tsukemen is ¥1,000 and ramen ¥950, the shop takes no reservations, and it closes when the soup runs out.
  • Gallery Bar Albatross — the only bar in Omoide Yokocho, the lane by the west exit of Shinjuku Station, open every day of the year from 17:00 until 2:00 or later. Cocktails are listed at ¥600 to ¥800, and the Omoide Yokocho shopping-street page lists payment as cash. The Friday and Saturday opening times differ between official sources, so check before you go.
  • Bar BenFiddich — a 15-seat bar on the ninth floor of a building in Nishi-Shinjuku with no drinks menu: you tell the bartender what you like and a cocktail is made for you. Bookings are taken online for three seatings a night, at 19:00, 21:00 and 23:00, and the bar does not accept reservations for groups of more than five. Opening days are irregular, and the next month's dates are announced on the 20th.

Counters in Shibuya

Shibuya puts its counters in basements and on high floors, a few minutes either side of the station.

  • ICHIRAN Shibuya — open 24 hours in a basement in Jinnan, three minutes from the Hachiko Exit and next to Shibuya Marui JAM. All 21 seats are at a counter divided into single booths, the ramen is ¥1,180, and children's ramen and children's tableware are available.
  • Oreryu Shio-Ramen Shibuya Center Gai — a salt ramen shop in Shibuya Center-gai that opens at 11:00 and serves until 7:00 the next morning, every day of the week. The basic bowl is ¥830, all seats are non-smoking, and every bowl is described in English as well as Japanese.
  • Shibuya Menya Musashi Bukotsu Gaiden — 19 seats three minutes from the Hachiko Exit of JR Shibuya Station, open every day 11:30–22:30. You pick the soup, then black with a thickened soy sauce, red with a spicy miso sauce, or white with no sauce.
  • GBF – Goodbeer faucets — a craft beer bar on the second floor of a building in Shoto, reached by lift, with 24 beers on tap and 50 kinds in cans. Its FAQ states that there is no cover charge, no otoshi and no service charge; opening a canned beer costs ¥300, waived during happy hour from 15:00 to 18:00. It is closed on Mondays.
  • Tower's Bar BELLOVISTO — a counter on the 40th floor of the Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel, about 150 metres up and five minutes from the West Exit of Shibuya Station. The ¥2,000 per person table charge that applies from 19:00 does not apply at the counter. The whole bar is non-smoking, the dress code is smart casual, and from 18:00 guests must be 20 or over.

Still open after midnight

If your evening runs long, these are the ones still serving.

  • ICHIRAN Atre Ueno Yamashita-guchi — open 24 hours inside the station building at JR Ueno Station. All 36 seats are at a counter divided into single booths, the ramen is ¥1,180, and you order by filling in a paper sheet.
  • Ramen Kamo to Negi — open 24 hours, one minute from the North Exit of JR Okachimachi Station, with 19 seats and no smoking. It is cash only, and late-night visits are walk-in because reservations are taken only Monday to Thursday, 11:00 to 21:00.
  • Isomaru Suisan Ueno 6-chome — a seafood izakaya open 24 hours every day, three minutes from JR Ueno Station, with 154 ground-floor seats and free Wi-Fi. Seating is non-smoking and there is a separate smoking booth.
  • TORIKIZOKU Ueno Chuo-dori — a yakitori chain open until 5:00 every day, from 16:00 on weekdays and 13:00 at weekends. Every food and drink item is ¥410 including tax, there are 8 counter seats, and an English menu is published as a PDF.
  • Isomaru Suisan Nishi-Shinjuku 1-chome No.3 — open 24 hours every day, one minute from JR Shinjuku Station, with 93 seats and free Wi-Fi. Seating is non-smoking and there is a separate smoking booth.
  • Sushizanmai Higashi Shinjuku — open from 11:00 to 5:00 the next morning every day, three minutes from Exit A1 of Higashi-Shinjuku Station, with last orders at 4:30. Eighteen of its 72 seats are at the counter, nigiri starts at ¥140 a piece, and the restaurant is non-smoking throughout.
  • Gallery Bar Albatross G — open 19:00 to 5:00 the next morning, every day of the year, on Golden Gai's 5th street. Prices, seat numbers and payment methods are not stated on the official site.
  • Sushizanmai Shibuya Tokyuhontenmae — open 11:00 to 6:00 the next morning, four minutes from Exit A2 of Shibuya Station, with last orders at 5:00. Fourteen of its 62 seats are at the counter and the restaurant is non-smoking throughout.
  • AFURI Shibuya Dogenzaka — serves until 5:00 on Friday and Saturday nights, and until 23:00 from Sunday to Thursday, closing earlier if the soup runs out. The branch is fully cashless, and the rainbow vegan ramen is entirely plant-based, with noodles bound with lotus root instead of egg.

Good to know

  • Carry cash. The standing area at Kadokura is paid for in coins and small notes as each item arrives, and Kamo to Negi takes no cards, IC cards or QR payments at all.
  • Payment is not the same everywhere, and cashless is not always an option. AFURI Shibuya Dogenzaka states that cash cannot be used at all, while Sushi Tatsu is cash only and the Omoide Yokocho page lists Albatross as cash.
  • Expect a per-person charge at many places. Chair seats at Kadokura add ¥200 per person, Shojyo charges ¥500 with a small appetizer, and Bar Ishinohana in Shibuya adds ¥500 with a one-order minimum. The Auditorium and GBF both state that they charge nothing for the seat or for service.
  • Ichiran adds a late-night charge between 22:00 and 6:00 at all three of its branches here, and does not publish the rate. Seats there cannot be reserved; the Fast Pass only gives you a priority lane.
  • Shojyo has two rules worth knowing before you climb the stairs: it does not admit parties made up only of people who are not drinking alcohol, and the stairs up to the bar are steep and staff cannot help you up or down them. Last entry is at midnight.
  • Three bars state an age rule of their own. Bar Ishinohana does not admit anyone under 20 in any circumstances, Tower's Bar BELLOVISTO admits no one under 20 from 18:00 even with a parent or guardian, and The Auditorium admits no one aged 20 or under.
  • Where one seat has to be booked, book it early. Bar BenFiddich gives reserved guests priority, may not seat walk-ins, and cancels a booking if you are 15 minutes late. Bar Ishinohana's online form takes one or two people and asks for at least a week's notice, and the bar is closed on Wednesdays, Thursdays and public holidays.
  • Small shops stay small. Bukotsu Soden has 17 seats and its sister shop Menya Musashi Bukotsu has 12, Nagi has ten, and OPEN BOOK is about ten square metres, so one person often gets in faster than a group.
  • Some addresses are shared by a hundred shops. OPEN BOOK has no signboard and states that it is the third shop in from the outside on Golden Gai's 5th street, and opens from 20:00 until about midnight. Sushizanmai Shibuya Tokyuhontenmae is the branch open to 6:00; the chain's other Shibuya branch closes for good after trading on 3 November 2026.
  • If a bar is not where you want to start, Kadokura writes that women and families come to its bright, clean room, and all of its seats are non-smoking.
  • Touting for bars and karaoke in public places is banned by the Taito ward ordinance, and the police ask visitors not to follow street touts under any circumstance. If someone stops you on the street, keep walking and go to the address you chose yourself.
  • Plan the way back. Last trains from Ueno and Okachimachi leave between about midnight and 1:00, so check your own line before the last order. If you miss it, Isomaru Suisan Ueno 6-chome, Isomaru Suisan Nishi-Shinjuku and Isomaru Suisan Shibuya Udagawacho are open 24 hours, and Oreryu Shio-Ramen serves until 7:00.

Plan the rest of the night

For how each area fits together, and which exit to leave the station from, see Ueno, Shinjuku and Shibuya. The full list of places with seats, hours and charges is at all venues, and the walking routes are in the guides.

For a whole evening laid out in order, the night plans run day 1, day 2 and day 3 in Ueno, with a separate Shinjuku plan. If you are out with other people, the friends and groups page covers seats, charges and private rooms instead.
